For some perspective on the distances involved at the
Grand Canyon in Arizona.
The distance by trail
from the Bright Angel trail head at the South Rim to the Lodge at the North Rim is about 29 miles.
It is 9.5 miles from the north rim lodge to the south rim lodge as the crow flies,
or helicopter if you have to hire one to haul you out.
The elevation of the North Rim lodge is 8300 feet.
The elevation of the South Rim Lodge is 6900 feet.
The elevation at Phantom Ranch campground at the bottom of the canyon is 2500 feet.
If you hike down from the North Rim you drop 5800 feet in a little less than 15
miles.
If you hike down from the South Rim you
drop 4400 feet in a little less than 15 miles.
Remember
unless you have a lot of cash or a good credit card you have to hike back out
I did the north rim to south rim hike with very little effort or strain and stayed at the Phantom Ranch two nights.
Of course I did this in 1950 as a boy scout.
